Mother Culture is a topic that may need no explanation to those well-versed in the Charlotte Mason world, but for those who are newer, you may wonder why we consider it vitally important that a mother invest time in reading books (other than those she reads to her children), developing skills, and pursuing interests outside the needs of her family.
Indeed, it is a big responsibility to raise, nurture, educate, and clean up after our children. We may feel that we do no have time to dedicate to our own interests and edification. However, what Charlotte Mason knew, and indeed what the whole world used to acknowledge about teachers, is that if they do not develop their minds, they will have nothing to offer to their pupils. In these days where we deplore the scripted curricula that often substitutes for a knowledgeable instructor, let us remember that we mothers are persons, too. We need ideas to feed our minds just as the children do. As Ms. Mason said in School Education, "If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children... we would have happier households."
Below we list some resources that come under different aspects of Mother Culture. Some of these resources were hard to "place" because really good ones fit under multiple categories. If you know of any other good resources, feel free to email us at orthodoxnourishingsouls@gmail.com
